Ukraine’s Energy System: Before, During and After the War ⚡️🇺🇦🇬🇧
The UK and Ukraine have signed a 100 Year Partnership, a century-long commitment to work together on trade, energy, science and technology. Ukraine sits at the crossroads of European energy and trade. It has Europe’s largest underground gas storage capacity, its electricity grid is now synchronised with the EU’s, and it’s a key route for moving energy and goods across the continent. Rebuilding and modernising that system is one of the biggest investment and business opportunities in Europe today, and our generation will be the one working on it.
Meet our first speaker: Professor Simon Pirani
We’re opening our 2026–27 talks with one of the leading experts on energy in Ukraine and Eurasia.
• Honorary Professor at Durham University
• Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (2007–2021), one of the world’s leading independent centres for energy research
• Author of Burning Up: A Global History of Fossil Fuel Consumption and co-editor of The Russian Gas Matrix (Oxford University Press)
Professor Pirani will explain how Ukraine’s energy system works, how it has adapted, and where the opportunities lie next.
