Discover the impact of student-led movements in our History of Student Activism Teach-Out, where we'll delve into the transformative role of student activism in shaping fair labor practices and social justice. We’ll spotlight pivotal campaigns like the SOAS Justice for Workers (J4W) initiative, which began in 2006 to fight for equitable conditions for all workers at SOAS.
Originally focused on outsourced cleaners, the J4W campaign expanded to support all outsourced staff, including those in catering, security, and maintenance roles. Through student solidarity and strategic actions, the campaign achieved significant victories such as the London Living Wage, sick pay, and, most notably, the integration of outsourced workers into the SOAS workforce as full employees in 2018.
We'll discuss the campaign’s ongoing efforts to ensure management upholds its promises and how its principles continue to challenge privatisation and outsourcing practices beyond the campus. This teach-out will connect these historical victories to current struggles, offering insights into how student and staff solidarity can drive systemic change. Join us to learn, discuss, and be inspired by the legacy of activism that continues to shape our world."
