Join us in the Brunei Gallery Lecture on April 13th at 18:00 to welcome Peter Sanders to talk about his new book, Heaven, Earth & The Ten Thousand Things, a remarkable photographic project spanning twenty-five years, capturing the essence of China's diverse Muslim communities.
Through stunning visuals and insightful narratives, this book chronicles the unique fusion of Islam with ancient Chinese traditions. It offers a rare glimpse into a world where East meets West, and the past intertwines with the present, beginning when the early Arab Muslim Ambassadors arrived in China. This was as early as sixty years after their migration from Makkah to Madinah and stretches over five major imperial dynasties to the foundation of the modern Chinese nation state. The Ming period gave Chinese Muslim culture a thoroughly indigenous stamp. It was under their rule that Hui became the standard appellation for Chinese Muslims. Hui scholars delved into Islamic tradition, found resources that enabled them to think beyond the Abrahamic box and discovered common ground with Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism.
